school named sandy hook. one photograph to share with you as crews rush to the scene. let me bring in my colleague jason carroll who has been working his sources. what do we know? >> disturbing story. the shooting happening at sandy hook elementary school on dickerson drive. this is coming to us from one of our affiliates. police are reporting a number of injuries. the nature of the injuries at this point are unclear. we're going to be checking that throughout the morning. state police sources say that one person is dead. earlier reports of a second shooter. that has not been confirmed at this point. a few more reports, apparently the shooting was reported shortly after 9:40 a.m. this morning. police reported that a shooter was in the -- apparently in the main office. >> which is hard to tell with this image that we're looking at because that's sort of bird's-eye view of the school layout doesn't show where that is. we should mention that one of the tv stations that has been reporting on this was told by a witness that she saw two children, one with a bloody face and the other with what

is sending its children back but the school in question, no. the kids from sandy hook elementary are not going back to class today. they won't be going back to class for a while. they will go back to a school in a neighboring town in monroe. it is being readied for those children and they will return. as others have returned on a two-hour delay today. all of this as this town buries yet another of its dead. a 6-year-old girl, jessica rekos. her family will lay her to rest today. and just so you know a little bit more about that little child. she loved horses. she wanted a cowboy hat and cowboy boots for christmas. her parents spoke with abc news about their little angel. >> she was a ball of fire. she ruled the roost. >> our little ceo we called her. she was the boss. >> reporter: as they remember their child there are so many funerals that have yet to take place in this town, not only for the children but the teachers, as well. at this time, though, there is the business of getting these children back to some kind of normalcy and for so many people that means school. sandra endo

wrestling with so much heartbreak, all of the newtown schools except for sandy hook elementary will reopen. grief and the fears of returning students an additional concern. police officers will be at every single school and today the town will lay to rest, the grandmother of charlotte bacon says her 6-year-old granddaughter was a bundle of energy who loved dresses and a second, jessica rekos, loved horses, she wrote her own horse stories, excited about a pair of cowgirl boots she was expecting to get for christmas. now to get the latest on the school's reopening this morning, sara endo is here in the heart of newtown with more. >> reporter: they're starting to see a lot of school buses rolling by and in about an hour or two classes will be in session. they all may be anxious about school returning back to normalcy but this could be the first step to healing. step towards normalcy, for newton kids that means go back to school. >> we're a little bit worried because we know what we thought was a secure school had this happen to them. >> reporter: facing fear may be the first step to overcome

through on, was installing this new security system at this elementary school at sandy hook elementary school so that, if there were to be a stranger or visitor to come to the school after the school doors closed at 9:30 in the morning, they would have to ring the bell. security very important for dawn hochsprung. friday morning, she was in a meeting, according to a parent, with the school psychologist, and they heard the pop, pop, pop, and immediately sprang into action. and lunged for the shooter, and that is when she passed away. one report, as she was lunging for this young man, there was a teacher down the hallway, who she yelled at, get in the classroom, close the door, lock the door from the inside, all of this from this principal lunging at the shooter. she was married. she had two daughters, three stepdaughters. let me read you this one tweet, wolf. this was from her 30-year-old daughter, christine. say that two adults at sandy hook elementary are recovering from gunshot wounds. now we are -- we are now hearing would survivors who were shot. they are expected to be able to help in the investigation. the police saying today when it is appropriate, when the time is right, they will be able to question those two adults further. we don't know when those 600-some-odd kids will be able to return to school. those children from sandy hook elementary. we are told that school is closed indefinitely until they are able to reopen it. but it is a crime scene and there is a lot of processing. this morning, we were told that it could be months and months before that school opens. the same goes for the lanza familiar family home. here is the latest word from the connecticut state police this morning. >> we are holding both crime scenes, the school and secondary crime scene, indefinitely. we seized it under search sxwarpts we will hold those locations until we have completed our work and we feel it is appropriate to let them go. it is not to read anything into that, it is common practice to d

hockey. students in newtown, they are back in school today. but to be clear, not the students of sandy hook elementary school. students at other schools, they are seeing more police, more counselors on hand, just being in town the last couple of days there are a lot of police officers just sitting in the driveways of a lot of the schools here, clearly security being beefed up in this town right now. teachers union says classes will discuss the shooting in age appropriate manner. it is not clear yet, though, when sandy hook elementary school will resume class. but when they do, it will certainly be at a different school in the neighboring town of monroe. and i just got back from newtown this morning, and during dinner time last night, i was invited to spend some time with these two volunteer firefighters, they're with newtown hook and ladder and they went into emergency mode, of course, early last friday morning. they are rob mana and ray corbo. they served their community now for more than 20 years each. but the day they got that call, they say it was like nothing they had ever seen be

to be a teacher before she even started kindergarten. she was a full time substitute at sandy hook. we'll remember mary sherlach, the proud mother of two young daughters. we will remember victoria soto. no one in this town will ever forget victoria soto, she died trying to protect the lives of her first graders. she was the oldest of four children. and, of course, the school principal dawn hochsprung. even little kids know when someone cares about them, and that was her. we will remember her as we remember all 26 lives lost in that school that day. 26 lives cut short friday morning at sandy creek elementary school here in newtown, connecticut. newtown is now the nation's heartache. it is our open wound. a whole so large that we're not sure god can fill it. something to hope for. his hope is, everyone's hope, as wez bring you some moments from tonight's vigil, starting with first responders coming into the auditorium to a round of applau applause. , those who answered the call at sandy hook elementary school. we want to update you on the investigation as well, the developments in the aftermath of the tragedy in newtown. here's what we know now. police say that two people shot and wounded in the rampage are recovering. initial reports indicated only one person who was wounded had survived. now, investigators continue piecing together exactly what happened. now, they say they're not going to stop until they've interviewed every witness and analyzed every piece of evidence including each round of ammunition. faculty members are meeting today. schools in newtown will reopen tomorrow. but the classes at sandy hook elementary, they're going to be suspended until further notice. we are also expecting another briefing from connecticut police, could start any minute now. we'll be monitoring that, going to bring it to you live as soon as that starts as well. >> reporter: lieutenant paul vance who's been briefing roertds, he'll be briefing once again. they were just 6 years old, their lives cut short by a horrific act of violence. next hour f

of the sandy hook elementary school. work continues inside the school and as you just heard lieutenant vance talking about, there were three guns found next to the body of the suspected gunsman, 20-year-old adam lanza, he killed himself with the handgun and used the bushmaster ar 15 to shoot his victims. the semiautomatic rifle really was the main weapon used. we have also used that the 20 children killed inside the school were shot multiple times, every single one of them, wolf, was, of course, 6 or 7 years old. >> so heartbreaking to hear the details come out and to learn about these young kids. 20 of them. 6 and 7 years old. all first graders. six adults as well. president obama is on his way to newtown right now. he has touched down in connecticut a few minutes ago. he is not going to be able to chopper here, he will have to drive because of the inclement weather. he will meet with families and first responders then later tonight, he will speak at an interfaith vigil here in newtown. we are going to have live coverage of the service in its entirety. that will begin at 7 p.m. eastern. >>>

. the sandy hook elementary school. for those of you who are just tuning in, we are now getting numbers, our own john king reporting, quoting law enforcement sources as saying at least 20, but perhaps closer to 30 individuals, many of them children, have been killed in this incident. individual suspect, a 20-year-old, is -- the suspect, the shooter is a 20-year-old. law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation telling our susan candiotti, that suspect, we believe, is dead right now. you just heard police at a small briefing, didn't provide a lot of information, but they did tell us the area now appears to be secure, but this has been a horrific, horrific mass killing at an elementary school in connecticut. a school for kids from kindergarten through fourth grade. we're watching all of this unfold. lisa procachini is on the phone right now. she's a parent of an 8-year-old at the school, the sandy hook elementary school. your 8-year-old is fine, i take it, lisa. tell us what happened. walk us through what you saw and what you heard. >> well, i had a call from one of the teacher

grade at sandy hook elementary school. cnn's jason carroll joins me now with more on that vigil. how is this community dealing with this extraordinary loss right now? >> they're just completely torn up. there's no other way to say it, to see the number of people, hundreds who came out here at stratford high school. this is where victoria, vicki as everyone called her, vicki soto, this is where she graduated back in 2003. when everyone got together here tonight, they did their best to remember her. they talked about how soto always wanted to be a teacher, ever since she was a little girl. she talked about wanting to be a teacher, that's what her friends said. tonight they talked about the heroic actions that she took in her classroom when the gunman burst through the door, how she rushed the kids into a closet to try and save them and then of course the gunman took her life. as we were out here tonight with her sisters and her brother, her cousins and all of her friends, and doing what they can to remember her, i spoke to one young woman, a friend of soto's for many, many years. just

responders who were the first people to enter the sandy hook elementary school and discover the carnage there that ended up being the loss of 20 children and six adults in that school and then, of course, the mother of the killer who was shot in her bed and the killer himself. the attorney general apparently is not traveling with any other senior justice officials to newtown. he will also not be attending any of the funerals or the memorials. and again, you will not be seeing the pictures of him. there's no plan for this to be anything public other than these meetings he's going to have with those law enforcement officials. but, of course, this is a day of more farewells in newtown. six, six funerals in this tiny community, six visitations also. so 12 services. these people being laid to rest today, allison wyatt, she is just gorgeous. she loved to draw. and she told her parents she wanted to be an artist. benjamin wheeler, look at that smile. he's just so sweet. huge fan of the beatles. his parents tell us. and then look at this. catherine hubbard, you almost know her personality from

was the picture taken from the school, sandy hook elementary. her mother just got that picture last week. one of her mother's favorite pictures that that's the picture her mother says this is the image we want the world to see of our victoria soto. they describe her as a dedicated teacher. a woman who didn't call her students students. she called them, quote, her kids, every time she spoke about them. she actually herself wanted to be a teacher every since she herself was a little girl. and so, it was -- the family was especially proud when she became a teacher. she was really the rock of the extended family. she was the one who did secret santa every year during the holidays. but she's just really especially going to be missed. also here that you see here in the crowd are her family, her two sisters. she's got a sister, julian, another sister, carly, her brother carlo matthew, her father, they are here as well. her cousin here, who i spoke to earlier today. a lot of the folks here are wearing green and that's because green was one of victoria's favorite colors. the word went out today, if yo

, and then have slowly been settling down and that was mostly because of superstorm sandy. so today with the level at this more palatable sort of level at 350,000 the big question is will today be just a blip or will this be the beginning of a trend, and that's what you really want to see. you want to see the level of layoffs continuing to at least stay the same and obviously you want to see them come down but at the same time you also want to see hiring happening and that's where that government jobs report that we focus on once a month, that's where that comes into play. we're going to get the next one next week, that government jobs report and the big worry, carol, that's hanging over all of this is the fiscal cliff. although we're still in the middle of wondering what congress is going to do about it, companies are already holding back hiring so that is clearly impacting the jobs market but the good news once again is the layoffs are slowing, down 12,000 to 350,000 last week. carol? >> thank you very much, washington. alison kosik thank you so much. >>> growing outrage over the decision of a n

and had taken that job there at sandy hook elementary school two years ago. not just a teacher, somebody very passionate about her own education. she recently enrolled in a ph.d. program. she leaves behind a husband, two daughters and three stepdaughters as well. mary sherlach, the school psychologist, she was also a victim there of the school shooting. we heard the librarian talk about a meeting taking place between some of the administrators. they heard this pop, pop, pop in the hallway. they went to investigate and at which point were confronted possibly by the gunman and they never returned. but mary sherlach was described by people that knew her as part of the crisis intervention team. so this a person, wolf, that people would be going to and grieving with at a time like this and she's no longer around for people to talk to. she's not with us anymore. she was an expert in psychologist. she got her master's from southern connecticut university and spent a lot of time working in the community and did a lot of work with disabled adults. those are just two of the names of the 26 victims

this dramatic situation of, the massacre that claimed the lives of 20 children and 6 adults at the sandy hook elementary school. authorities have just released the full list of the victims' names. 12 girls and 8 boys. they were shot and killed. all were either 6 or 7 years old. we're told they were first graders. all six of the adults killed at the school were women. just minutes ago, a medical examiner told reporters, all of the victims died of gunshots, and everybody was hit more than once. three guns were found at the scene, but the medical examiner says all of the wounds he knows of were caused by what he calls the long weapon. that would be the modified semiautomatic rifle, that's the civilian version of the military's m-16. cnn's national correspondent susan candiotti is working her sources. we're hearing from the governor of connecticut, dan malloy. update our viewers on what you're learning. >> wolf, today we are learning more from authorities about -- they are picking up more evidence, both at the scene, crime scene, as well as at the home that the shooter shared with his mother. and

adam oepd fire in sandy hook elementary school, but a person that knows him says he hadn't had communication with his son in about two years when adam cut his father out of his life about the time the elder lanza remarried. until then, peter lanza, an executive with ge, seen in this linked in photo, had weekly visits with adam. according to the same source that told us lanza didn't live the in the newtown since 2001, eight years before his divorce with ex-wife nancy was finalized. in the hours after the shooting a reporter for the stamford advocate outside peter lanza's house told cnn lanza was unauto wear of his son's involvement in the shooting. >> i said we received a report that somebody at this address is connected to the shooting in newtown. his face just went from -- you know, he'd been this very polite stranger making pleasantries with me, and he went from that to sort of shock and then just this horrified look. essentially declined comment, rolled up his window and went inside his house. >> since then he released a statement expressing condolences for victims' families
